Babylon 5

We have just completed a re-watch of the full run of all five seasons of Babylon 5, still for my money the best science fiction soap opera yet made.

My observation at this point is that despite the occasional hunks of cheese and the fact that it owes much to The Lord of the Rings it holds together better than any similar work of such length. Season one was rather better than my memory made it and season five was not a dead end. The final couple of episodes though, are unrelentingly sad.

Definitely agree. We watched it all when FX showed it every night for as many months as it took and it's stood the test of time remarkably well.

Bloody brilliant, isn't it? I bought the entire lot on VHS when our local Forbidden Planet were chucking them all out in favour of DVDs. Then later I bought the entire thing again on DVD :-)

Yarp.

Rangers, Khazad Dum Zahadum, An alliance of the free races against a big bad, a small group of idividuals defying the odds, sorting out home after the war is over, cod religion and mysticism.

Minbari Elves, Narn Dwarves, the Centauri not unlike faded Gondor, though they end rather worse.

I would agree, although I'm less convinced with the final series (it seemed too rushed and patchy - although this is mostly thanks to the studio). What I found interesting ploughing through it was how the pacing of the story was so different then (designed for a weekly rate).

It's funny you should say this: I have been watching them too. Currently in season 2. Favourite character, Ambassador Londo.

I think that by the end of the series you may like G'Kar best!

I've still not managed to watch S5. I should, someday.
