Today has been a salutary lesson in the old morning after the night before tradition.

Were I a computer on some sci-fi movie or TV show this morning, I should have had a large number of indicators flashing their distress in orange and red. Some of the LEDs would be showing nothing at all; burnt out in all probability.

Around an hour and a half ago I had that uncomfortable feeling that I normally aim to achieve whilst I am still asleep; it’s that moment when you can feel your body trying to reboot all systems at once after the last of the previous night’s alcohol has been cleared. It’s that moment when you suddenly get very warm and break out into a sweat (concealed to some extent to day by the fact that I am very warm and sweating anyway; it is uncomfortable in the office, but I am assured by those what’s been outside that it’s even worse out there) and you feel the nerve endings in your arms and legs begin to hum. Possibly vibrate.

A couple of systems still aren’t properly rebooted, I think, but most indicators are now green or yellow nudging into green.

Yesterday was both Furtle’s birthday and the day an old friend visited from the Yoo Ess of Aye.

Furtle was ostensibly working late on Olympics business and we expected that she would turn out around 9pm for a drink. In the end, they took pity on her working late on her day of jubilee and we were in the pub by 6pm. We had a very nice pub meal, indeed a superior pub meal and a couple of drinks, but then everyone else turned up and we got to the chat and alcohol properly. Poor Furtle has suffered more than Yours Truly, but I must admit that I don’t enjoy the post booze detox these days. Actually, I never did, but in days of yore it didn’t take as long as it does now.

I doubt I shall learn from this event, but then I don’t drink much that often these days, so I don’t think there’s much to worry about.

But oh dear: woe is me.

I fear this will be me tomorrow. I came to Newbury foe a belated leaving night, danced in the clubs and have to be up to get a train back to London at 630 in the morning.

I empathise. I simply can't do the drinking on a school night thing anymore.

It was a splendid night, good to catch up, though I missed the train I was aiming for, had to catch a late-night stopper, got off at a station with no cab rank, couldn't raise a cab via telephone, and so set off and walked 4 and a half miles home, in pitch darkness, bed by 2.30AM. I'm getting a tad drowsy now.
