Underworld

Well, despite [livejournal.com profile] ashenkat's concerns, I enjoyed Underworld. Although I accept that there is too little of the swirly leather coat and the cat suit. I don't think I agree about Kate Beckinsale's lack of charisma - or rather I think that given she was playing an immortal killer her cold delivery was quite apt.

Certainly Bill Nighy as Viktor rather made up for it in the charisma department, but then that's Bill Nighy, isn't it? What else would you expect from him? (Touted as a possible contender for the new Doctor, by the way).

What is it about vampires as a concept that makes them interesting? I don't know. I mean, they always seem to have a sense of style - outside the Buffyverse of course. It must be the strength/immortality thing, since the blood part is positively icky and anyone who says otherwise is either telling porkies or needs serious counselling. I mean, Highlander covered the same ground without the need for extreme sunblock and a mightily restricted diet, and that worked nicely. Well, the TV show did. The jury is still out and won't be returning soon on the movie sequence. I mean, Highlander 2, really guys...

Of course, I now need to watch Underworld on a bigger, and widescreen telly. This is where Johnny Cheapshot (aka [livejournal.com profile] romney) redeems himself.

You know I SWEAR Bill Nighy used to be in Juliet Bravo ( with a scottish accent) because I hada crush on him waaaaaaaaaaay back when.....

(Personally I think he would be a brilliant Doctor)

Kate Beckinsale ; eh. I adored her dad and I have read some interviews with her about loosing him that I relate to very much and have found very helpful. She can look porcelain beautiful but I cannot really find a film in which I haven't found her accent irritating and felt she was acting and not one where I have believed her as a character. I'm willing to persevere for her dad's sake I think; but the fact that she is in it has always put me off watching Underworld. Plus vampires; I looved the idea of them when I was 16, Interview With A Vampire was quite a seductive film ( cannot read the books no matter how hard I try) and what lovely fabrics!

And I think they know their wine; I bet a vampire's wine cellars are to.die.for.

The first thing I recall seeing her in was Shooting Fish and I thought she was luvverly. I still do, despite the cut glass accent.

I resemble that remark, and given my punctuality I also resemble Johnny Come Lately.

Excellent. You'll have to bring the DVD up to Fuchsdorf next weekend. Incidentally, watched the Count of Monte-Cristo. Twice in fact because it was so good..

Well, I don't think there IS such a word as "annally" although it appears to be an old Irish name. Google also reveals it's a guest house in Dublin - don't take the bottom bunk.

[patient expression] A record of a year - annal. By extension, annally as a pun on 'anally retentive' [/patient expression].

Sorry, thought you'd misspelt annually.

Either works - I'll look annally up later in my Big Book Of Words.

er, I believe rather more scholarly types than m'self have discussed the vampire's role as a sexual metaphor- the almost animalistic side of a man or woman takes over and they become predatory, have to sneak up on some innocent and, well, penetrate them in a way that makes them gasp and leaves them feeling all weak and confused... In most stories it's even written as secretly rather enjoyable, in of course a wicked and very wrong kind of way. Look at Lucy Westenra, she loves it, the bad girl. Poor Jonathan Harker, three of them to keep sated, no wonder he was knackered by the time he escaped.

Vampire fiction is also accepted within our society, to the extent I won't get a second glance reading a book that's obviously vampire fiction on the train, whereas I will if it's obviously erotica.

What if it's vampire erotica?

(Which must exist given that [livejournal.com profile] feistyredhead was able to find* furry erotica on sale in a remaindered bookshop in Camden ...)

*Not that she was particularly looking, but ... well ... some things once found can't be unfound.

What a charming idea, you know I hadn't looked?

There is only a tiny quantity of furry erotica (no, not my interest I hasten to add) and one reason why it would be easily found on a remainder or second hand bookstall is almost everyone who sees it immediately wants rid of it. There is a niche audience, but it's very very small.

Of all the things ever discussed on this journal, I thinkl you two have just won the prize.

I'm not cklear on what furry erotica is, and I'm less sure I want to know...

My friend [livejournal.com profile] welcomerain posted a link from her lj to a bunch of excerpts just today, without a word of warning. "Bad descriptions" doesn't really cover it.
