Twelve Angry Men
Wednesday, December 3rd, 2003 12:29 amJust back from the quiz, and rather wobbly round the edges.
We lost. Again. But nevertheless, a good time was had, I think. Certainly by me at any rate. My first pint of Sam Smith's in many a year and for once it hasn't given me horrible indigestion. The pub we went to is the Rising Sun on Clothfair. I haven't been a great fan of the place over the years - the decor and situation are both pleasant enough, but they've rarely kept a good pint. Tonight, however, was different; good beer, well kept, and good food in rather large quantities.
There is a new landlord, I gather. Long may he reign.
Our worthy opponents were the Barbican, a team of excellent quiz players, including the League President. To say we were outclassed is sonmething of an understatement. Never mind.
It seems that one of the members of that team, one PST, whom I have known in quizzing circles for a number of years, has chanced upon this journal. Hello, Sir. I hope you enjoy your stay - although I admit to having been less than entertaining recently, I rather hope that this will not continue for too long.
Upon my return this evening, to the drafty garrett that is chez Caddyman, I find that the State has called upon me to fulfill the one duty it can demand of a citizen during peace time. And thus in January I must present myself at the Old Bailey.
Should be interesting (and probably boring in equal measure).

Date: 2003-12-03 05:48 am (UTC)You need a really good reason to NOT turn down sitting on a long case - just not wanting to won't cut it. I guess being a bachelor in a full-time civil service job makes it a distinct possibility of ending up on one of those that goes on for weeks, months, years... If it's a concern get something high-commitment booked for February, like having that new liver installed, or one of them new-fangled face transplants.
Take several good books and plenty of ciggies because it involves a lot of waiting for something to happen. And always remember to turn yer mobile off in court, as the consequences of screwing up the trial range from some eyeball-eater getting off on a mistrial to you getting banged-up for contempt.

Date: 2003-12-03 06:39 am (UTC)The potential hanging around for ages could be a bit of a hassle, though. Beyond that, it will be 2 weeks of 9am starts that will cause the grief.
Oh dear.
