Paul McGann's portrayal was excellent - though he could have done with a more closely plotted story...

Unfortunately the series option on his contract lapsed about 8 years ago! I guess the producers decided to go for a fresh start. I can't say I blame them. At the risk of offending huge chunks of fandom, I think that I'd go right back to the beginning if I was producing it and build an entirely new continuity.

It's not as if Doctor Who was big on continuity across its 26 years anyway, although they made more of an effort in the last season and a half.

So that's who it is. I spent from when I heard it until now labouring under the misconception that it was the guy who played Burnside in the Bill. "Get in the tardis, you ruddy slag" would probably not have worked.

Sure would. Mind you I'm not sure if a dry slap would have sorted the Daleks out or if telling the Silurians that he couldn't give a toss about them would have done it.
