For my sins I have been asked to write a guide to the annual housing subsidy determination round at work. An easy thing to ask and agree to, a little less so in the doing.
The 'determination' is the legal document we issue each year which provides local authorities with the information necessary to set their housing budgets and rents etc. for the financial year. As you would imagine, being a government programme, and one which involves the movement of around £3 billion in subsidy, it is a time consuming and complicated affair. The paper will, no doubt, grow like topsy until all interest and life has been sucked out of an already dry subject. Indeed, I see this as the Jacob's Cracker of manuals; drier than a pharaoh's sock and only marginally less exciting.
The need for this document has been occasioned by the impressive staff turnover the division has experienced recently (a turnover I had rather hoped to be part of myself), and we are rapidly running out of people who have first-hand experience of the process. I, gentle reader, am one of those who remain, hence the reason it falls to me to write.
I shall be writing this magnum opus over the next few weeks.
By way of relaxation of an evening, I shall be sitting in front of the computer writing NWO character sheets.
Is it just me, or do I lack variety in my life at the moment?
