Tonight for the first time in two years, I managed to get my scanner up and running. I definitely need a new one, not only did it take a lot of fiddling and a new driver download, but it is so slow.

R e a l l y s l o w.

I have been planning to scan some of my old artwork - not much of which remains in my possession - because it is beginning to deteriorate markedly, and I reckoned digital copies are better than no copies. Unfortunately, most of the originals are bigger than my scanner, so they are necessarily cropped.

Anyway, here's a Katie Bush I did back in December 1981 at the tender age of 22. It's based on the picture on the back of the Lionheart album, as I recall, but I closed her mouth since I'm rubbish at teeth...

Lionheart

A couple of other pics are here:

Untitled portrait

I remember doing this one in May 1981 between 2 and 4 in the morning when I was stressed out studying for my Social Psychology final. Artwork has always helped me when I'm down, and I seem to do my best work when I am exorcising negative emotions.

Brooksie

This final picture is from 1988. I went through a period where I just could not get Louise Brooks' face out my mind, iconic as it is. Pandora's Box is still one of my favourite movies from the silent era. This is Lulu as she would have appeared circa 1929 (so it says on the pic, but the scan is too small to read that clearly).

It's a long time since I picked up a pencil or brush in anger. I must do something else soon.

Additional: I hadn't noticed in all these years, but seeing the three pictures together like that, it seems I have a soft spot for women with pouty lower lips. Hurrah me.

Very good I did not know you had a talent for drawing. Did you study that at university. I recall you mentioning something about uni in one of your past posts, something about dancing to Talking Heads. Can't remember if you mentioned what you studied though.

I should go and check. But I won't.

I myself started a Fine Art degree at the University of Hertfordshire. It was my final choice. Failed the third year 3 times. A hat-trick.An accomplishment in itself, not recognised by many. In fact, recognised by no-one.

No, I did Business Studies at Wolverhampton - that well known centre of educational excellence.

Other than the satisfaction of not having to work for a living until I was 22, it has stood me in no stead at all...

The middle girl is amazing!
Any chance of a scan with all the hair in?

Also, if you scan in sections, there are several/many who can stitch these together for you.

It would have to be scanned in sections - the picture is just a little less than A3 size which seems to be too much for my scanner.

How precisely do you stitch separate pictures together?

Ta, Baggy.

It's all about the eyes. Get those right and you're half way there. That's where the life is.

Wowee!

Getting furious isn't the problem, finding a flat space to clear to put paper down on is!

Glad you like. ;-)

...that's me.

When I say the scanner is slow, I'm not kidding! But sometime later this week I'll re-scan the nude portrait and the Katie, and maybe email them to you for reassembly, if that's OK?

Glad you like them, anyway. ;-)

That was the one that decided me I ouight to scan the buggers - the paper is falling apart and there's coffee splodges on it.

Mucho gracias & all that.

But unless I get signed off for more sick leave I doubt I'll have much time for that sort of thing this side of the NWO deadline!

Grumble.

There's probably a good reason, but I can't call it to mind right now.

At the moment of colurse, it's a question of finding time and space.

Just to add my voice to everyone else's at saying how fab they are.

So were you using "Lea Drew" as a nom de plume on the first one, or was there a "Bryan" missed out on the left?

Most kind.

No, it was a function of the picture being too big for the scanner. The full runic experience reads: Bryan Lea drew this 30 December 81.

In fact I find my memory is spectacularly lacking, since I actually looked at the date on the nude portrait to find that it's dated for January 81 rather than May as I said. So I must have been panicking over my mid sessionals rather than my finals. But I still drew it in the wee early hours of the morning.

That I do remember!

Thanks - they appear to be pretty much all that is left in my personal collection - I have a couple of scruffy drawings left, but the remainder seem to have gone. Though I know a few are qith friends.

I wonder if they have scanners...?

Glad you've finally come out of the closet about being a bloody good artist. Your small "Clapham Circle" have known about these goodies for years, and have always appreciated your artistic skill.

Now, if Wolves were as good with a ball as you are with a pencil...
