Not my weekend, really.

Getting to GD was unfeasibly difficult. Left the house at 9.45, and just missed the train to Nottingham. Finally arrived Nottingham railway station at 13.40. Thanks to the complete lack of sign posting in Nottingham, it took [livejournal.com profile] irdm, who graciously offered to drive down to pick me up, until 14.30 to find the station. It's only 8 miles or so, but the one-way system in Nottingham is not for the uninitiated. Up to Mansfield for a little shopping and so it was gone 16.15 when I arrived. I could have flown to the States in less time.

Weather was very hot, and play was well progressed, unsurprisingly, and I had no prior view of my brief. Just one of those things; my entire attendance at the event was cursed from the start, and this shouldn't be seen as a detraction on the hard and sterling work put in by the writers and organisers. These things happen.

What bit of playing fun I did have came courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] jimfer, [livejournal.com profile] philoko, [livejournal.com profile] smittumi and Von Twine, so thanks for that, chaps. The League of Extra-Ordinary Archaeologists were quite mad.

As is often the case, the chatting and booze in downtime was the best bit. Nice to chat to [livejournal.com profile] littleonions, [livejournal.com profile] nyarbaggytep, [livejournal.com profile] ephraim, [livejournal.com profile] mrcook et al. I managed to put some faces to names, particularly [livejournal.com profile] nortysarah and [livejournal.com profile] robcee, and chatted to lots of people and drank a fair quantity of wine. Too many to remember, chaps, I'm sorry.

And then, of course, all the bunks were full - at least where I looked, so the infamous Bryan Martyr Complex TM (not the most attractive aspect of my personality, which despite me beating it into submission often, does pop up and say "I Told you so" with monotonous regularity) set in and I sat up all night on my own getting chillier and more tired, listening to music and watching the dawn come up.

On the plus side, as I was sitting watching the world waken, a hedgehog appeared out of nowhere, and wandered around in front of the hut for half an hour - in fact it nipped it to mooch around inside for a while, and when it came back out made a beeline for a discarded plate of cake on the floor. It cheerfuly scoffed the lime sponge, but turned its nose up at the chocolate cake. It then sloped off, replete, around the corner and ito the bushes.

Anyway, tired and back-achey, I came home early, having nabbed a lift off a rightly bemused [livejournal.com profile] nyarbaggytep who had to leave early for work purposes.

The soft drinks machine at Nottingham station swallowed my money and failed to give me the ice cold coke I wanted. There was a copper on the station, so I couldn't remonstrate with the vending machine with the energy I felt the situation required.

England lost in Euro 2004, and I forgot to pay [livejournal.com profile] jimfer for the clay pipe he bought for me. Must sort the latter out soon.

My new Wolves shirt has arrived, so I am fixed for the new season (yay!), but my monitor has recently developed an unsettling ripple effect in the display (Boo).

Shower and early bed now; I'm shattered.

I'm too old for all this lack of sleep, combined with too much heat. I think my enthusiasm for larping/freeform has dwindled to an all-time low. Two more events and then that's it. No more.

I should have done indeed.

I was absolutely cream-crakered when I got in on Friday just before 8 and the thought of trailing off to Ewell for probably an hour before turning around and coming back.

IAnd guess who got [livejournal.com profile] rotwang's mobile number wrong when putting into the memory of his own mobile?

It's true, the last train back towards your neck of the woods is 2250 so we wouldn't have quite made closing time... Ah well. *pat, pat* better luck next time...

I have very fond memories of dawn in the field opposite Robin Hood scout camp (after a very amusing game of silly accent Risk). Huge sympathies that your memories of dawn there are not so pleasant.

I for one selfishly hope that you change your mind about only two more events and then that's it.

Well, we'll see.

I'm definitely not writing any more once the NWO cycle is complete. Attendance at other events may be more negotiable... ;-)

Good. I have a part in mind for you in the game that i am working on atm. Although, when I say "working on", i do, of course, mean merely talking about. Hopefully, I can overcome inertia (and post-event come down) and get some of it written over the next few weeks.

It was, as ever, a pleasure to see you, albeit for only a short time.

Hello! I didn't realise you had nowhere to sleep, or would have found you somewhere. It was lovely to meet you finally and next time I will make an effort to either wake you up and move you out of the sun or get you a hat!!

Aside of that it was swell chattin to you in the flesh.

Nooo, not you as well.

I hate camping with a passion, I hate events with no indoors with a passion. I don't hate larp or freeform at all. Perhaps if enough of us build up a righteous hatred of the nastier side of the hobby then more people will run civilised events. I don't really understand why roleplaying has to involve masochism, but it seems to be a peculiar unspoken rule, and is frankly bollocks.
