Piss Holes in the Snow

Despite being tired when I went to bed last night, I slept badly. This despite drinking several pints of anaesthetic with DT sans LJ in the Landor in what might conceivably be my last ever visit to that hostelry. I found it hard to drift off, and then kept waking up again. The problem, I think, is that the weather has suddenly gone mild again, and the chill of last Friday, which demanded loads of bedding,has been replaced by a comparatively sub-tropical (for November) warm front which meant that it was too warm to sleep under the winter covers,and too cold not to.

The result is that my eyelids feel like glass paper this morning, and I am having to shovel back coffee like it's going out of fashion.

Other than that, I have just checked play.com and see that my order for the Lord of the Rings twelve disk extended DVD box set is being packed. That means I should get it by Friday.

I'm all excited; I haven't seen the extended versions of Fellowship or Return, and I am really, really looking forward to getting square eyes watching the full and unedited trilogy in as few sittings as I can possibly manage.

I am hopeful that the re-edited and extended version of Return of the King will actually be a good movie and a fitting end to the trilogy, after the huge disappointment that was the cinema release with its idiosyncratic editing,¹ pointless plot changes, ² and multiple endings. Talk about spoiling the ship for the want of a ha'p'orth of tar.

Nonetheless, I a expect that at least some of these deficiencies will be addressed in the extended version, even though the end of the Battle of the Pellennor Fields will continue to annoy the geek in me to the day I die.

Still worth having, though, for the scope and audacity of the film making, and the breadth of vision it contains. And it's a an order of magnitude better than the Barry Otter franchise.


¹ Particularly the loss of any and all scenes featuring Saruman.

² The Army of the Dead at the Battle of the Pellennor Fields? The Three Musketeers meets Pirates of the Caribbean deus ex machina siege relief force? I think not.

Oh, me too. I can't wait. And you're right, it felt like they left so much out of the theatrical release.

Irritating changes

The changes really irritated me too. The unveiling of the standard is an incredibly important moment signifying The Return of the King (which is the title of the damn movie) and to leave it out really, really miffed me.

And what about Ghan-Buri-Ghan, the Grey Company (poor old Elrond loses his sons), the Mouth of Sauron, the Eowyn-Faramir romance (although that is hinted at for a split second) and so on? And Denethor's estate should sue for his mischaracterization.

It spoilt the entire series for me. I understand that the extended addition has a few rectifications, but while the revisions in the first two films didn't really affect the story, these changed it, for me at least.

At least they ended with Sam. That redeemed it a bit, but not quite enough.
