The other night - Thursday, to be precise, I watched a one-eyed copy (Ahar, me hearties) of Hell Boy on VCD around at
romney's place.
Despite being out in the States, it's not due for release in the UK until September. These inexplicable delayed releases were always annoying, and now they're positively stupid, because people end up doing what I've done - watching a pirated copy for free (my favourite price).
And it's not a bad film. It's not a classic by any means, and some of the effects are a bit ropey, but by and large it's an entertaining example of the genre. There's mad Nazi 1930s science, dodgy occultism and Rasputin. What more do you need?
As Dr. Broom (Hurt) says, "Make no mistake about it, there are things out there that go bump in the night. We’re the ones who bump back. Great line.
Ron Perlman plays Hell Boy with a certain knowing humour which stops just short of breaking the fourth wall. Abe Sapien is credited to someone called Doug Jones, who may well have 'played' the creature, but the voice was certainly done by an uncredited David Hyde Pierce. John Hurt plays it straight, but Selma Blair is a tad wooden.
Overall, about 90 mins of a slightly darker comic book brought to life. It does do what it says on the tin. But it doesn't do anything else.
