Smoke bomb

As promised we had the Bomb Shelter Awareness Exercise this morning and it was everything I hoped it would be.

It turns out that I was slightly wrong, but not materially so. The designated bomb shelters are the khazis in the core section of the building as they are farthest away from external walls and have solid walls of their own. Now while that makes sense as far as it goes, it does rather reduce the number available for the exercise by two-thirds, which all adds to the fun.

I decided not to avail myself of the opportunity to play sardines with my colleagues – I know what it is to stand in a stinky loo and I know what it is to stand in a crushing crowd. I have enough imagination to combine the two and felt that my time could be better spent in cynical mockery than actual participation.

On the upside, while everyone was busy stacking themselves across cisterns and urinals and such, I had a nice chair in the smoking room, the place all to myself and a table, too so that I could make a start on the fiendish-rated sudoku in today’s Times. Although I finished yesterday’s fiendish edition, today it defeated me by leading me into the trap of believing it to be easier than it is, so I made excellent progress right up to the moment I needed to put two 7s in the same line. Then it all went horribly wrong.

Maybe I shouldn’t have been so judgemental about the Independent sudoku earlier in the week.

Anyway, the upshot is, I spent a very pleasant and quiet twenty minutes exercising my brain instead of assaulting my nose with odd fragrances in a loo-full of bored colleagues. I am win.

I must say that it's an honour to count a chap whose vocabulary includes the word khazi among my friends, but am left wondering why your building grew outwards from a fortified toilet into John Prescott's private empire. Hold on, no I'm not.

Ah, but those days are gone, Sirrah. Nowadays we are Kelly's Heroes...

You can't mean Ruth Kelly, can you? I mean, I leave the country for eighteen months and look what happens...

Incidentally, did the Fat Controller fall and if so, how?

Yes, we've been the Department for Communities and Local Government under Ruth Kelly since early May. Labour's poor showing in the local elections was his fault for not keeping it in his trousers, apparently.

Two Jags is still DPM and he managed to hold on to all the perks without the responsibilities until about a month ago when he was spotted playing croquet instead of working or something. Now he's given them up, too.

Laughed like a drain at this.

Well right up until I realised I'll be rejoining the Mothership/Arkham Asylum at the end of the month.

See that Cubicle at the end....that's my Office that is.

No really !

The worrying thing is that I know you're not joking...

Welcome back to the Hellmouth...
