To think it is no more than two weeks since we were slowly rendering down into puddles of fat in the heat. Now it is clearly autumn. The hottest July on record has been replaced by a very cool August - I'm not complaining, mind.

I'm glad it's not just me. This morning on the radio, Wogan was reading out a letter from someone who thought they might need to speak to their doctor and get their medication checked. He pointed out that he had no memory of late summer or early autumn. He recalls the hot weather very clearly, but there are Christmas lights on the King's Road and Harrod's have opened their Christmas store. Add to this the current weather patterns and the poor sap was suddenly worried that three months had passed and that he had forgotten the lot.

The High Road continues to be a hive of activity, or more precisely a centre of incident. As I noted an entry or so ago, the bough on the tree opposite got twisted off by the wind on Saturday. Last night - or rather sometime early this morning - there was a very loud crump as a car hit something directly outside the Athenaeum Club. I was barely awake and drifted off again almost immediately, and Elle reckons that it couldn't be seen from the bedroom window, so it must have been directly outside.

Exiting the place this morning, I find a very crumpled car on a trailer in Athenaeum Road, plus swathes of broken glass and shattered bumpers (fenders) on the High Road and the pavement thereto. No sign of whatever the car hit, though.

They say things come in threes.

I'm not sure I want to know what the next thing will be; they are creeping closer from across the street and getting more violent.
