What has happened to the telly over the past few months? There has rarely been anything worth watching other than the odd movie here and there, but right now I can only think of three programmes to watch, which are currently running. Having looked at what I am missing on say, Sky, I realise that I am, in fact, not missing anything. That leaves us with three programmes across maybe a hundred channels if we factor in digital.
Of those three, one is currently only a repeat and is getting watched simply because I missed the initial run. (There is a number of other programmes out there currently in transmission that I do like, but having already seen them, I am not counting the repeats). So that leaves me with two programmes on their first run: Without a Trace and CSI: Miami. Neither of them earth shattering programmes and even I’m not entirely sure why I watch the second on the list – there is a vain hope that David Caruso will get his come-uppance, I guess and the opportunity to lust after Emily Procter, but not a great deal more.
With the exception of Doctor Who, which will not reappear until the Christmas special and thereafter not until around Easter next year, there is not a single, regular UK produced programme I want to watch1. The remainder of the shows are exclusively American and apart from variant cop shows, only LOST and House broadcast on terrestrial telly. Of those, House is on repeat and LOST shows every sign of being made up on the spot with random plot developments being thrown in without regard to the overall structure. I have all of season 2 on my PC, but haven’t felt the need to watch past episode 9 yet and that was four months ago. Still, that Evangeline Lily, eh?
That leaves me with the Stargates and Battlestar Galactica. The former is still fun, but increasingly formulaic and the second not due until October and following a cliff-hanger that makes you wonder precisely where they can take the show. Since I do not have Sky, each of these last three come from the torrents so even if there is a programme I want to watch, it’s probably not being shown on terrestrial TV.
What’s a couch potato to do?
1Though I remain hopeful for both Robin Hood and Torchwood when they air on Auntie later in the year. There are still occasional one-offs like Sharpe and Hornblower worth the effort.
