I never realised what an institution a night club can be; especially one that is regarded as tatty at best even by its most frequent and dedicated clientèle. Still, an institution it must have been, to make the national news when it burnt down over the weekend. I never went to Edwards no. 8 myself. I had the opportunity to a couple of times but never bothered. I’ve never seen the attraction of seedy, over-priced places that play music I don’t like too loudly, whilst selling warm lager with unidentified floaty bits in, to people I should rather garrotte than be seen with1. Still, a fair wad of my friends in Brum seemed to like the place, so it cannot have been without its attractions. Either that or the night life of our second city is all that I have ever feared.

Anyway, over the weekend, the club with a name like a Havana cigar went up like a torch. No-one was hurt and that’s a good thing.

I understand that the place was frequented by Goths. I don’t suppose they know whether to laugh or cry at the moment.

I shall have to keep an eye out now, to see what the next “in-place” in Birmingham is for me to avoid.

1Having just re-read this following Olly's comment, I thought I ought just to qualify this line. The people I would wish to garrotte are not on my friends list!

Damn...

...I had no idea... I know it isn't / wasn't to your taste old bean (and I have no problem with that), but my what a shock! Not as important to me as others, but I do have one great memory of that place 14/09/2001 when a whole bunch of us got together there to dance and "howl at the moon" in the weird confusion that followed the events of three days before... A kind of celebration of life going on, and the joy of embracing more than one idea... I'll miss knowing it was there, if you see what I mean.

I fully understand, Old Chap.

I just had the need, for some inexplicable reason, to curmudge pointlessly.

I'm not even in a bad mood!

At the risk of this becoming an eternal thread of clumsy mitigation, I was not in any way upset/bothered/in conflict with your sentiments, truth be told I've had a couple of really disappointing and uncomfortable nights there too, was just moved to remember the really good one :-)

Glad to hear you're not in a bad mood, this is good... See you soon..?

Indeedy. I'm not travelling around the country too much at the moment as I am trying to conserve cash. But if you find yourself in the neighbourhood...!

Went twice - didn't like it either time. Mind you, I never found a club in Birmingham I'd say that I really liked, even if, over the years in the Midlands, I've had a few good nights out in Brum.

Yeah, even in my twenties, when I was more inclined to go out every night than I do now, I never cared much for night clubs, for the same reasons as yourself. Horrifyingly crap music played far too loud for you to have a good natter with your mates. Much preferred the pub.

On the other hand, any club with a blues band playing in it...
