I doubt that many people reading this are particularly interested in the career of over-exposed, ex-England football captain and marketing goliath, David Beckham. I am writing it up simply because I am floored by the fact that he has managed to land a five-year contract reportedly worth £128 million to play for the LA Galaxy.

I'm kind of amazed that any US soccer team has that kind of money to throw around, soccer being a fairly unpopular sport this side of the pond. Though I suppose the idea is to change all that.

Me too. I mean that comes out at around $251 million give or take a cadillac or two. I wouldn't have thought that the entirety of MLS had much more than that in total!

Mind you, there is a lot of interest in the Hispanic community I guess, even if no-where else, so there is a market to tap.

Being a bit over-ambitious as there is a good chance that LA Galaxy and indeed the MLS as a whole wont be around in five years time seeing as the rule allowing one big wage per club and the recent death of Lamar Hunt might well bankrupt the whole thing. Still, nice work if you can get it, I suppose.

I noticed that in the draw myself. Should be a good match, although a trip to the fifth round will really only be a delay to the inevitable disappointment at the end of the season for both clubs when the play-offs are missed by a couple of points. Still, maybe your lot need it more if the Graeme Souness rumours turn out to be true.
