Does anyone know how I can stop the dial up connection popping up and trying to activate when I am surfing around on the web?

It's only just started doing this in the past day or so. I could delete it as I am on broadband via a router, but I am reluctant to do that as I like having the option available as a back up. I seem to recall that there is a way of telling it never to dial out, but I'm stuffed if I can remember how to do it - unlike the broadband connection it doesn't seem to have the option available simply to disable it.

Edited to add: I am running XP Pro

I can help.

Make sure the computer is on.
Then when the dial up connection pops up, take a large shiny fire axe and go Medieval on its USB and axe the microchips out of the bloody thing.

Hey presto no more irritating pop up.

Try the following:
  1. Go to Control Panel
  2. Select Internet Properties
  3. Select the Connections tab
  4. About halfway down the dialog box is a set of radio buttons
  5. Select the Never dial a connection option

yes. i'm a bastard. but so was the first Doctor.

I'm seriously considering it once my finances reboot!

Macs (over here at least) are still much more expensive than PCs...

Run a virus/malware scan, old bean. As this is new behaviour this may be something trying to dial to a premium number.

Aargh! Too much conflicting wisdom...

...and it all sounds right and feasible!

I would concur with Master Romney, new/changed behaviour is indicative of something naughty secreting itself in your system - specially if you have not changed any settings yourself.

Once you've checked as per his suggestion, you should also give ming's suggestion a go as well.
