The plumbing didn't go so well. There were no accidents and all is at least back where it was when we started, but despite removing the u-bend and cleaning dollops of gooey kludge from it, the whole drains no better now than before. This means that the blockage is somewhere else and that it may be a job for dyno-rod, or would be if the place were ours.

We haven't looked at the futon yet. I have inspected the wood we have at our disposal and I think it will have to be a bolt-on repair rather than a replacement since it is of a different design and the spare futon frame we have is for a single rather than a double. I think we shall nip across the road in a little while for a coffee and then I shall apply my power drill, imagination and destructive tendencies to the problem. After that I have some wires that need fixing to the floor so that no-one trips over them.

Where'd the long weekend go?

My Boys (Wolverhampton Wanderers) have made the play-offs and in one of those cosmic jokes that happenstance throws up from time to time, we will have to play keresaspa's mob, local rivals (West Bromwich Albion) for the privilege of making the final and possible promotion to the Premiership. Given that at the beginning of the season I would have taken a mid table finish after all the off-season shenanigans, player and manager departures, I can only say that the team has over achieved massively. This doesn't mean that we can allow ourselves to roll over and play dead against the Baggies, though. Local pride insists that the winning team has a fight to get to the final. Whoever wins out will know they've been in a fight. Blimey.

All in all, though, it's been a good season for Midlands teams. Birmingham are already promoted to the Premiership, so the West Midlands will have at least two Premiership teams again next season (along with the perennially under achieving but ever-present Aston Villa) . Derby County have also made the playoffs, so there are three Midlands teams up for the final promotion spot. I suppose that means that Southampton will nick it.

In League One, ephraim's Nottingham Forest are promoted back to the Championship toot sweet, so that's another (East) Midlands success.

In League Two, Walsall are promoted and Shrewsbury Town are in the playoffs only two seasons after making it back into the Football League. Dad would be so proud.

Whatever happens, I cannot say that the football season just ending has been a waste of time: Leeds United, the over-spending braggarts of yester year are relegated to League One for the first time in their history. Goodbye, good riddance and how we laughed.

I'm of to get the chicken out of the freezer in the hope it will defrost for tonight's meal.

Re: plumbing - I strongly recommend buying a set of plumber's rods (cost - about £30) and rodding your own drains (fnar). It's relatively easy and will save you a fortune in fees.

Oo. Interesting idea; we only have one rubbish sink at the moment, so I'm not sure I want to splurge £30 on stuff (and theoretically it's the landlord's job and he still owes us for the door).

drain rods are good but bear in mind that you do "get your own back" in a manner of speaking and that can be ...phew!

The most common cause of blocked drains is congealed fat and emulsified oils - washing up liquids can only carry so much.

Hey, that reminds me of a TV prog I saw once, years ago, in which a fed-up tenant went to the landlord's office with a huge bulging bin bag, and emptied it on the landlord's desk in front of the blighter. Playoffs ahoy! Our semi is against Yeovil, so I'm relatively confident of progress, then there's a final against someone. So hopefully there'll be celebrations thereafter.

If there's one team I would have wanted us to avoid in the play-offs it's your lot. We've had it too easy against you recently which will mean some of the big-time charlies will think they can just coast whilst that 7-0 over Barnsley has papered over the cracks of what was a late season capitulation. Our record in the play-offs is decent but I have a really bad feeling about these ones.
