Belly up

Gentle Reader have to report the death of my computer.

When last I turned it on for a quick browse, it was working, albeit not at its best but tonight it refuses to turn on at all. It looks as though the power unit hath gone belly up and is curling its tootsies even as I type. So for the next few days I am unable to access any of my files and such, speak to friends on MSN or download porn for I am using the laptop I borrowed many moons ago and never quite got around to returning (sorry, Lee - I know you read this from time to time).

Since I know almost nothing about the internal workings of a PC, I shall be on the phone shortly to a couple of people (yes, [livejournal.com profile] romney this is where all those sarcastic responses to my posts come back to bite you)for help.

I hope that all it is is the power thingy. As I noted a few days ago, I can't afford a new PC right now, and I have no way of transporting the one kindly offered by [livejournal.com profile] jfs a while back...

In brighter news, the lungs seem clear now, and the giblets are less giblety. Back to work tomorrow.

Alas I am the sort of chap who has power supplies and other comfutery bits lying round under-foot (have in fact just stood on a SATA cable)

Seem to remember buying a new case a month or two back with the vague plan of building a second system out of spare bits and bobs to act as a net server.

Must be in the back room, somewhere, and I can pull the PSU for you. It may take some time to excavate, and involve heavy lifting equipment, satellite mapping and local guides (although I've already been warned by the police about approaching the latter)

You have also provided the slim excuse I need to visit comfuter show next weekend for a replacement, plus whatever else I can't resist buying.
