Well, that was the weekend, that was.

Other than purchasing replacement trousers for those I mangled last week, and doing a modicum of painting, I can't say that I have really achieved anything. Ho-hum.

Still, I have borrowed a digital camera for next week, and the incipient paranoia that was setting in over my perceptions of a lack of NWO froth have been allayed somewhat by a last minute barrage of questions from players together with an increasing appearance of the subject in one form or another on people's LJs.

Today I indulged my taste for psychedelia and purchased a copy of Mr. Fantasy by Traffic, and Part of my Past, an anthology of music by Simon Dupree and the Big Sound. I daresay that perhaps as few as one of the people on my friends list will have heard of the latter (yes, [livejournal.com profile] cybersofa, I am talking about you). I never understood the band's name since none of the members was called Simon Dupree. The other thing that I never knew before today was that three of the members, the Shulman brothers, went on to found Gentle Giant, a snippet that may interest [livejournal.com profile] matte_kudesai.

At them moment, however, I am indulging in a little '70s nostalgia with my other purchase of the day, Rock Follies, the soundtrack to the TV series of the same name. Songs written by Andy Mackay of Roxy Music fame. (Sad to say I also have the series on DVD - it has aged a bit, but is still watchable).

So the bank holiday is over. Work tomorrow.

Joy.

Kite is a great favourite of mine but that's the only Simon Dupree number I know - thought it was a one-off. Is it typical?

I've got Mr Fantasy on vinyl, also their second album. Recommend Blind Faith as well if you haven't already got it. I actually own all too few original 60s albums because I was going to a lot of gigs at the time, and the albums never matched up to the live performances. Big mistake, I realised too late that even a token effort like, say, Disraeli Gears was better than no Cream at all.

Rock Follies, loved it. Rula Lenska! Julie Covington! That girl with the allegedly fat bum! Sue Jones-Davis! Hmm, so you'd recommend getting the soundtrack album and the DVD ...

It turns out from reading the liner notes that the band hated Kite even though it was their greatest (only?) commercial success. The rest of the album is an oddly listenable if overblown mix of club/cabaret/R&B/blues. You can't imagine it belonging to any period other than the '60s.

Rock Follies - the girl with the allegedly fat bum was Charlotte Cornwell. As to buying both the soundtrack and the DVD, well I did, but that's because I like to listen to music while I'm hacking away, and the tracks are not separated out from the drama in the DVD - plus some of the tracks are truncated.
