Interesting when a BIG STAR dies isn’t it?

When [livejournal.com profile] colonel_maxim yelled down the stairs of the Athenaeum Club last night that Heath Ledger had medicated himself to death, I was appropriately sad. Not yet 30 and dead; a waste. I then thought, “He’s the bloke who plays the Joker in the new Batman film”. Then I thought, “Other than that, I have no idea why he’s a star. What’s he been in?”

It turns out that I have actually seen a film of his: he is the one who was not Matt Damon in the bits of Brothers Grimm I didn’t sleep through – though I wasn’t sure if he was from the same clone vats as Josh Hartnett; it’s hard to keep up with the Hollywood look-alikes.

Furtle has a copy of A Knight’s Tale, which I can’t remember ever watching, though I probably shall at some point. I see he was in The Patriot, which I refuse to watch as I do anything involving Mel Gibson’s anti British propaganda movie campaign career1.

So there we are. An entire career been and gone and the only bit that interests me hasn’t been released yet.

1Chicken Run and, if I am in the mood, possibly the first couple of Lethal Weapon movies, excepted

I enjoyed Brokeback Mountain but it wouldn't appeal to everyone...

Ditto.

Then again, I appear to be the only person in the universe who thought "A Knight's Tale" was boring twaddle.

'10 things I hate about you' is also good, I think the thing here is that he very clearly had loads of potential, far more than most other actors his age.

Oh yeah and he was in 'Ned Kelly' but I think that may well be more anti-Brit propaganda.

I may have to root some of these movies out and take a squint.

That might even include Ned Kelly. Kelly was, by nature, anti colonial and despite being a murderous scumbag, has enetred Aussie folklore. It is inevitable that there will be something anti British in the retelling of his tale, if it is done from his viewpoint. I don't mind that.

With Mel Gibson it just seems to be part of his continued movie agenda to demonise the Brits in general and the English in particular. That's why I operate my one-man boycot against him.

Yours is not a one man boycott by any means!

He Demonises the English, not the British.

Thus I feel obliged to watch all his movies twice to make up for your boycott.

Well it keeps you from roaming the streets, so he has my thanks for that.

I was about to mention both Brokeback Mountain and '10 things ...' as worth a watch, for different reasons.

And 'A Knight's Tale' is great.

'10 Things' Looks like a standard teen comedy but it's far funnier than that.

Praise for "10 Things" seconded, or thirded. And it's a take on the Taming of the Shrew. Which is also cool.

I found the anachronisms in A Knight's Tale as off-putting as those in Marie Antoinette, such as the spectators at a jousting tournament clapping along with "We Will Rock You" and Queen Marie and her pals dancing to "Hong Kong Garden" (though Mr Ledger wasn't in the latter). But what a silly old purist I am. I'm sure the fellow acted in films more deserving of your attention.

I thought the anachronisms were what made the film. The use of footie chants for the knights ("he's blond, be's pissed, he'll see you on the lists") was inspired. And I've got to love a hero called Thatcher...
