All in the mind

It’s pretty much faded from memory now, but last night I had one of those dreams that seems less like a dream and more like a memory when you wake up – if you know what I mean.

I hate them. Or more particularly I hate this particular sort: I can just about remember now that it was something to do with me having turned down a job offer that someone had clearly expected me to accept and they were giving me a hard time about it.

I can just about recall a woman pointing at a note of an interview that in the dream I had no recollection of and she was saying “you were the only person to make this point and it’s happened” by way of proof that I should have taken the job and sorted them out. The fact that I did not recall the interview did not make any difference.

It was really odd; I recall going through dozens of papers trying to find out what this job was that I had interviewed for, been offered and rejected. That was really frustrating and when I woke up I had the residual guilt feeling hanging around for a good half hour afterwards.

My subconscious mind can be an absolute bastard sometimes.

In cheerier news, I have just kicked my weight-loss campaign on the knee and scoffed a Cadbury’s Crème Egg. Hurrah!

Back on the fruit for lunch, though.

I just had a Kinder Egg! Not had one for years, I got disturbingly excited about it. I got a small wheeled green snail wearing headphones.

That would be one of the characters from The Magic Roundabout though, shame on me, I can't remember the snail's name right now.

I had one of those dreams myself today. It involved being back at my old secondary school -- though grown up and aware that all the staff would have changed, yet somehow still in my teens at the same time -- where I absolutely had to see the principal (no idea why). Reception staff were checking mail for anthrax powder while I was waiting.

Odd dream. I still can't remember why I so urgently needed to talk to him, either.

Hmmm...

That would be Brian the Snail, wouldn't it?

Brian indeed. I always found that prog a bit surreal. Years later, it dawned on me that the creators were on acid, and that one can only fully appreciate the thing if one is too.

Apparently the English language version by Eric Thompson (father of Emma) was based entirely on the visuals and had nothing to do with Serge Danot's original French scripts.

The story, supposedly, is that Eric Thompson couldn't speak French so he made the stories up from watching the episode first.

Really? I thought it was done by a bunch of hippies with a sense of humour!

It may have been, just that some of them were French hippies. Vive l'aceed.

I saw The Magic Roundabout in French first, as a child, and to be honest I can't recall that the storylines were much more coherent even when in the original Gallic. Granted, they weren't *quite* as trippy as some of the English adaptations.
