... is he talking about me have I done something to make him think that I think too much maybe it's not about me at all but maybe it is what if it is no it's probably about something at work should I know what he's talking about are people going to think I'm really stupid for not getting it maybe it's something private perhaps I'm not supposed to get it I wonder if he wants sympathy maybe a sort of knowing comment would work showing that I share the joke yipe but what if he calls my bluff because I don't really get it and it would be awful to be found out to not get it after I've said that I do get it well not said so much as intimated it's about me though isn't it so if I do seem to get it then he'll know that I don't really get it because he's talking about me and I wouldn't say anything like that if he was talking about me but I would if he wasn't talking about me so maybe I should just play it safe and not say anything yes that's probably the safest option but what if he wants feedback and he thinks I'm ignoring him or that I'm somehow offended by the whole thing oh dear I really ought to say something something chummy maybe you know something neutral ...
