Yesterday was a bit rushed, or at least bits of it were. [livejournal.com profile] ellefurtle and I had arranged to meet [livejournal.com profile] pipsytip and [livejournal.com profile] phil99 in town for a pint and a natter followed by some necessary shopping. The first part went well enough: tube to Goodge Street followed by a couple of hours in the College Arms nattering about this and that over beer. Always a good way to while away a chunk of Saturday afternoon. The weather in the West End was rather more inclement (or less clement) than that we had left up here in Whetstone, with intervals of sun between torrential downpours.

Next up - and a little later than advertised - we did the shopping, or at least some of it. I decided that I really didn't need to pop into Orbital, I can do that next week if I need to. The comics aren't going anywhere and I got very fed up with the West End crowds very quickly. More precisely I got fed up with the Oxford Street crowds very quickly. I think there is an IQ dampening device at each end of the street broadcasting alpha waves or some such between Centre Point and Oxford Circus at least. I don't know if I am immune to it or not, but my patience certainly is affected and trickles away to close on zero very fast.

Be that as it may, we popped into Zavvi (I am slowly beginning to retain that less-than-catchy name, now it is clear that Virgin have flogged all their Megastores) and picked up probably too many DVDs: House season 3, The Wire season 1, plus some others on the 3 for £20 section. Furtle was anxious to buy The Long Kiss Goodnight, but Zavvi rudely insisted on charging full price, so I was sent packing to HMV to find it while Furtle investigated clothes shops in a partially futile search of additions to her wardrobe commensurate with her new job. I found the DVD for a reasonable £7 and added a couple more re-masters of early Barclay James Harvest albums to my CD collection. I now have pretty much all of their good stuff before they began their slow decline into pop-rock in the late 80s.

Next up was a trip to M&S. Our hero was in need of additional pairs of shreddies as too many of the existing collection required too much hoiking far too frequently, but enough of that. Several purchases were made by the pair of us including the acquisition of a new collapsible brolly - bigger than a tote, smaller than a full size one. Maybe too big to fit in Furtle's bag, so I may have a new brolly rather than her.

We just made it back to Whetstone via Waitrose to watch Dr Who - thank God for BBC broadcast apologies delaying schedules by two or three minutes.

In the evening we sat and watched The Long Kiss Goodnight, with [livejournal.com profile] smokingboot keeping us company. I knew nothing about the movie, but both Furtle and Boot recommended it highly and I was happy to watch it since it stars Samuel L Jackson, officially the World's Coolest Man.1 I frankly didn't know what to expect, but it is an excellent movie with Gina Davis cast against type and playing the part marvellously.

Later today there will be more movies. I have a soft spot for A League of Their Own (again with Gina Davis), so we will watch that. Furtle's free pick is Ginger Snaps. I have some trepidation concerning that, since she readily admits that while she likes it, the only other person she knows to share her views on it is [livejournal.com profile] evil_chalkie. We shall see.

Not sure what to do for the remainder of the afternoon now. I was going to crack on with finishing the Dr/Martha/Tardis model, but have had to stop again while glue dries. Oh well. Maybe some drawing.

1An honorific he somehow manages to retain despite some really poor movie role choices. Imagine how cool he'd be if he was more discerning!

Add me to the pro-Ginger Snaps crowd. While it's not the best film in the world, I thought it was definitely worth watching.

Haven't seen the sequels though, so it wasn't good enough to make me rush out to get them.

TLKG is a much underrated film.

In my opinion Ginger Snaps is not very good at all, it promises so much and then does...not very much thats interesting. Add it to the sadly very long list of disappointing films in that sub-genre (I won't say which one in case you don't know).

I think there is an IQ dampening device ... between Centre Point and Oxford Circus at least.

As I used to work in Our Price on Oxford St between those two points twenty five years ago(egad!), I can attest to that. We catered to the last dregs of humanity, who clearly left their brains at home when they emerged to shop.

Good choice with The Wire :)

I'm with the Furtle about Ginger Snaps - I found it to be quite neatly done throughout - the only flaw lies in the spin-offs.
