There comes a point where even if they are still yellow and unspotted, bananas achieve a sort of sedentary ripeness that means you know in your heart of hearts that you will never eat them, though they are not quite brown and soggy enough for you to throw them away with a clear conscience.

I have four bananas approaching that state in my desk drawer. I ate three of them yesterday and they had reached the point of ripeness where the skin breaks before the stalk does when trying to detach them from the bunch. The actual fruit is OK. I suspect that I shall just about manage to eat a couple more today with the last two hitting the bin tomorrow. They won't last the weekend and are exceedingly close to the tipping point: edible but just not attractive; soft but not soggy.

Bananas are strange beasts.
