So much for Ibuprofen.

Despite dosing myself up at a higher level than recommended (there's always a healthy safety margin on these recommended doses), the ache in the small of my back continues to gnaw at my consciousness.

I should dearly love to be able to replace my backbone with something less painful. An injection of mercury, perhaps.

This would have the benefit of being strong and flexible, if a little heavy.

Of course there would be major drawbacks. During the heat of Summer I would most likely be eight feet tall, but around mid-Winter I would live in fear of cats as I skulked around in the shadows like something from Land of the Giants.

Still, it would be an interesting party piece.

Unusual, too.

Well, after the great PC crash of '03 the retrieval process continues.

My firewall is now up and running, and lavasoft has removed several pesky pieces of adware that were haunting my registry and hard drive.

So far so good.

In a moment I shall be installing Microsoft Office Pro.

I have developed an aversion to installing new software after lats Wednesday's farce, God help me. But this at least is a Microsoft product....

Remember, remember
The fifth of November.
The Gunpowder treason and plot.
I see no good reason
Why the Gunpowder treason
Should e'er be forgot.

When I was a kid I liked Guy Fawkes night. I suppose we all did. Bonfires, fireworks, roast chestnuts, hotdogs and potatoes roasted in the embers of the bonfire. We would go up to our friends' place and everyone would contribute a few shillings to make sure there was loads of food and a reasonable variety of fireworks.

And then, a few years later, we started going to the coast where one of the caravan site managers would stuff an old derelict caravan full of wood and burn that as a bonfire.

Great.

But the fireworks seemed just a touch quieter. It didn't sound like the first night on the Somme for hours on end, and the weeks preceding didn't feel like sniper alley with kids lobbing claymores around with abandon.

Somewhere it's all got mixed up with Halloween in the little thugs' mind and they roam the place hoping to trick with menaces rather than treat for fun.

Christ it sounds like the Red Army relieving Stalingrad out there....

Bah, humbug.

Remember, remember
The fifth of November.
The Gunpowder treason and plot.
I see no good reason
Why the Gunpowder treason
Should e'er be forgot.

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.
