Ages ago in this very journal, I noted that I seem to have lost the art of weekends. Now I have a long one to fill. There's [livejournal.com profile] jfs' BBQ on Sunday, but apart from that...

I don't really want to float off up the West End or anything as it will undoubtedly lead to me spending money I don't have on things I don't need. And although that is one of my all time favourite hobbies, I feel that some self restraint is called for. Apart from which my right foot is sore again. I don't know why, but if a foot goes wrong, it's nearly always my right one. I'm a martyr to it, so I am. It's gone all tender - OK for sitting and standing, but I have a truly seafaring roll when I walk at the moment due to the limp I have developed. And of course this means that my left leg starts aching because I favour it to keep the strain off the right.

Ah, the joys of middle age. No doubt it will clear up in a week or so, but in the meantime. ARGH! I spent a few minutes looking through my LJ earlier to see how long ago it was since I last complained about my pins, but given my habit of writing irrelevant (or non-existent) titles, I still have no idea when it was other than it was within the last 12 months.

Still, being a civil servant, I now have a two-day bank holiday, not a one day holiday like most of the rest of you, so HAR. With luck the spare time means I shall be able to finish my final two NWO sheets and then be able to think about something else for a few days before I start fretting about writing something else.

And since today is payday, I reckon it's getting time that I re-mooted the idea of the Tex-Mex at Café Sol in the near future, though the enthusiasm on the last mention was less than stellar. (That's not to say there wasn't any interest, but sadly so few of us...). Anyway, I'll do a separate post on that after the bank holiday when more people will be looking at their PCs, and I won't bury it at the end of a post no-one is going to read, like this one.

Note: I look too much like John Martyn for my continued peace of mind.

Hell Boy

The other night - Thursday, to be precise, I watched a one-eyed copy (Ahar, me hearties) of Hell Boy on VCD around at [livejournal.com profile] romney's place.
Despite being out in the States, it's not due for release in the UK until September. These inexplicable delayed releases were always annoying, and now they're positively stupid, because people end up doing what I've done - watching a pirated copy for free (my favourite price).

And it's not a bad film. It's not a classic by any means, and some of the effects are a bit ropey, but by and large it's an entertaining example of the genre. There's mad Nazi 1930s science, dodgy occultism and Rasputin. What more do you need?

As Dr. Broom (Hurt) says, "Make no mistake about it, there are things out there that go bump in the night. We’re the ones who bump back. Great line.

Ron Perlman plays Hell Boy with a certain knowing humour which stops just short of breaking the fourth wall. Abe Sapien is credited to someone called Doug Jones, who may well have 'played' the creature, but the voice was certainly done by an uncredited David Hyde Pierce. John Hurt plays it straight, but Selma Blair is a tad wooden.

Overall, about 90 mins of a slightly darker comic book brought to life. It does do what it says on the tin. But it doesn't do anything else.
