Workin' on the chain gang
Saturday, December 11th, 2004 12:01 amBBC2 are showing an excellent documentary on Sam Cooke right now.
Now there's a man who could hold a tune; back in the days when R&B meant Rhythm and Blues, not Rump and Booty as it seems to be nowadays.
Quite apart from being an excellent singer/songwriter, he was also a pioneer in race relations, being among the first black performers to refuse to sing to segregated audiences in the deep south in the late '50s and early '60s.
If'n you're not familiar with Sam Cooke's R&B and soul songs, check out any one of a number of compilations available. Good stuff.
