It's a bird, no, it's a plane...
Sunday, February 13th, 2005 05:56 pmWell that was exciting.
I was part way through typing an entry, and the power went off. A certain Mr DT has not paid up, it seems. Luckily, on the bizarre key system operating in this place, we have an emenrgency £5 supply which will keep us going until I can persuade him to go andm pay the bill.
Ho hu. And here was I, looking forward to never having the elctric die on me at critical moments as it did down in Clapham. Hey-ho. At least he had the presence of mind top show me how the key system works before disappearing off to wherever it is he has gone this afternoon.
Anyway. I am now on broadband, courtesy Glyn and Adam, both sans LJ. The current set up is yemporary, and I am without printer, speakers or scanner (and indeed, Wacom Pad, thoughn I shall go searching for the appropriate driver shortly). I am typing this sitting on the bed, and with the keyboard on my lap. I have good reason to thank the fact that I have a trackball instead of a mouse, too. Nonetheless, I am happy enough for the moment, just revelling in the fact that stuff just downloads, and that even large appluications and such, whilst still taking time, now download within minmutes, rather than hours.
Monitors and bandwidth are curiously similar phenomena; once you have a bigger scren, or a faster connection, you can never go back. I have been on broadband now for, oh, three hours, and I already accept that a return to dial up would send me green-skinned and murderous in a rage of frustration.
My only annoyance right now, is that I cannot access the usenet. I don't know why, and anybody who might have the vaguest of suggestions has left the building. Never mind, I can cope without that for a while. The intarweb is suddenly a faster and more exciting place, and I don't have to borrow a chair in front of other people's PCs to experience it!
Hurrah!
