caddyman: (Doctor)
Not much achieved today; I had thought about going to the pub to watch the play off final for League Two, but as it was so manky outside I didn't bother. Shrewsbury lost 3-1 so won't be getting promoted after all. So all in all, I'm glad that I lounged on the sofa and watched True Grit instead. For some reason I have never watched it through before; I have seen bits of it but not the entire movie. That's sorted. I've now seen the entire thing apart from a couple of seconds here and there when I went on a coffee hunt. Good movie and the Duke was well worth his Oscar.

Tonight's Doctor Who was the best for sometime and a welcome return to form. I don't think I've mentioned this season so far and here we are, over half way through. The season started well, dipped a little when several consecutive episodes were aimed directly at the younger end of the market and then with the return of the Daleks, the wheels seemed to have come off. I like the Daleks, don't get me wrong, but we shouldn't see them every season, they are becoming over used.

Tonight though, with the adaptation of the novel Only Human by its author, we had a welcome return to and leap forward in form. Nice, too, to see the doodles of previous Doctors in the diary, including McGann for those who grumble the TV movie wasn't canon. It will be interesting to see how the second part of the story develops next week.

This evening the denizens of The Athenaeum Club sat and watched The Brothers Grimm on DVD. Typical overblown Gilliam, really. Pretty to watch, but hard-going in the story teller line. I think he needs someone of equal authority when he makes a picture, to over rule him on script and plot issues, even as he can over rule on questions of visuals. I'd love to know who finances his films; they surely have to wait forever to see a return on their investments! I enjoyed the movie, but I doubt that I would have had I seen it in the cinema.
