Now you may panic
Tuesday, July 24th, 2007 01:06 pmYou’re damned if you do and you’re damned if you don’t. The BBC news website helpfully includes an item on new medical research that links low cholesterol levels to cancer. Presumably the same people first announced that high cholesterol levels lead to cardio-vascular problems.
To be fair, there was a note of caution:
It seems that scientists have worked out what the rest of us have known all our lives. We will all one day die. By varying our diet, we can influence how and of what and potentially when – with a substantial margin for error, of course. But then there’s no accounting for that bus you might walk under, so is there any point to taking advice from doctors and looking carefully at what we eat, beyond making sure it’s clean, fresh and properly prepared.
Tonight I may well have a fried lard sandwich. I don't want cancer and I can take one of my statins afterwards, to mitigate the effects.
To be fair, there was a note of caution:
Cancer Research UK was wary of the study.
Cancer information officer Dr Alison Ross said: "The findings of this study should be treated with caution - it is based on summary data from previous trials and, as the authors point out themselves, it does not prove that low LDL cholesterol levels can increase cancer risk.
"Much more research is needed before any firm conclusions can be made."
