Wednesday thus far...
Wednesday, July 25th, 2007 11:45 amSuch fun.
Into the office, switch on PC and log in. Make coffee while PC is booting up. Eat sammidge while PC is booting up. Respond to email. Pick up other sammidge and get turfed out of building for impromptu fire drill.
Seventy minutes later, return to desk somewhat chilly to find sammidge curling at edges and coffee stone cold. I even managed to leave my snus on the desk, though I had all the really important stuff with me1 in case it turned out to be a real fire.
The wind chill factor followed by a return to the cosiness of the office has completely undermined my concentration, which is a fickle beast at the best of times and right now I just want to crawl under my desk with a pencil and sleep2. The lack of concentration should be tackled shortly when my newly warm and microwaved coffee kicks in. I hope so, anyway, because the fall out of not getting the monthly subsidy payment processed on time doesn’t bear thinking about. I had hoped to get it sorted yesterday, but a fruitless two-hour meeting with the Monster followed by an hour’s debrief put paid to that. We have, it seems reverted to the policy options I postulated back in January the difference being that we now have three days to write, approve, print and distribute a technical consultation, which can last no more than six weeks, instead of having seven months to prepare a considered policy review with a twelve week general consultation. Just another reason why I want out of this job.
Now. Where’s that pencil…?
1Rucksack with books, wind jacket, water, camera, MP3 Player and brolly.
2It doesn’t have to be a pencil; any useful working implement or tool will do. Take it under the desk with you and doze off. If challenged, you emerge brandishing the item of choice in triumph and announce that you have “Found it!” I have probably said this before.
