I daresay that it is a rare person who has refrained from talking to himself or herself from time to time. Generally, I would expect, when trying to work some intractable problem through, or maybe just in frustration at the inactivity of some recalcitrant inanimate object that really ought to know better. In cases like that it can be an aid to thought or a stress relief valve.
What is a little more worrying is when you find yourself at work hiding in the khazi minding your own business when someone goes into an adjoining cubicle apparently oblivious of the fact that someone else is lurking, and starts to mutter grievances or plots under their breath.
I find this happens quite a lot more than you’d think, which makes me wonder how many of my co-workers have the sort of mental problems you can’t control with copious amounts of alcohol or psychotropic drugs?
Which of the seemingly innocuous office workers is one memo away from going postal, and how many of the buggers will join in during the inevitable chain reaction?
Shudder.
