Well, if I have got gout, it's not classic gout with its "excruciating, sudden, unexpected, burning pain, swelling, redness, warmness and stiffness in the joint.1"

The pain has been annoying, rather than excruciating and certainly not burning. The two toes have been a little stiff, but there has been no obvious redness or swelling. Whatever it was, it seems largely to have improved immeasurably and got better as the joint warmed up while I was walking today. Anyway, we shall see.

I have a theory that TV signals get weaker the more houses there are between the transmitter and the TV set. For some reason the transmitter we use - certainly the digital transmitter - is in Crystal Palace. That is pretty much as far as you can get from here and still be in London. It must put a population of around three million sucking the energy out of those TV transmissions before they ever reach the Athenaeum Club. We have always had poor analogue reception in very bad weather and no digital reception at those times. The past three nights it seems that time of day is the factor. Each of three nights the signal has faded on both digital and analogue as we move into prime time. To the point where even the analogue channels have been unwatchable. Most of the time this won't be a problem,I guess, if it continues, but it will be annoying. Tomorrow will be the acid test when we want to record from two different channels around 9pm for Furtle. I may have to investigate the possibilities of finding a signal booster. Marvelous isn't it? Anyone would think that the Athenaeum was out in the boondocks somewhere rather than thirteen miles from the centre of London!

In a moment of weakness in HMV this afternoon, I bought The Fantastic Four and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. Not great movies, but entertainingly shallow and having the two movies in the same box for a reasonable sale price helped.

Cometh midnight. I guess I should go and have a shower and think about bed.

So much for the weekend.
