Like him or loathe him, how many events, other than the outbreak of World War 3 would freeze the entire bloody intarweb as have the partially confirmed reports of the death of Michael Jackson.

I was in the pub celebrating coming second in the quiz when I heard, unlike that day in 1963 when I got grass stains on my suit from lying on a wet area on a grassy knoll. Whatever your view of the man's talent, style or general oddness in later years, he was a giant of the pop music industry and 50 is no age to die.

Michael Jackson as he should be remembered.

A final word on the subject. No matter what the conspiracy theorists say, no matter the news writer's angle:

Don't blame it on the sunshine
Don't blame it on the moonlight
Don't blame it on good times
Blame it on the boogie.

Imagine my surprise to find, on looking at the BBC News website and again at BBC News 24 downstairs in the lobby, that Michael Jackson is STILL dead and that nothing else of importance has happened in the world.

It is good, I think, of the Iranians to put their electoral troubles and civil strife on hold as a mark of respect for a pop singer.

Pop stars; is there nothing they cannot do, even in death?
