Imagine my surprise to find, on looking at the BBC News website and again at BBC News 24 downstairs in the lobby, that Michael Jackson is STILL dead and that nothing else of importance has happened in the world.

It is good, I think, of the Iranians to put their electoral troubles and civil strife on hold as a mark of respect for a pop singer.

Pop stars; is there nothing they cannot do, even in death?

And then I watched the Glastonbury coverage tonight and The Specials played, and for me (my first gig as a foolish sprat) they were still awesome and played Monkey Man and I remembered being in a HUGE space (I was small) and there were skinheads and rastas and my cool cousin Caroline who was dating all of them and this music and I thought... this is what the world is like, everyone gets on, even shy white men can be good frontmen, I wish they'd stop blowing that herbal smoke around (I changed my mind later), god if my mum doesn't let me get some Doc Martins I'm gonna have to kill myself, they did Hey Little Rich Girl (which is the uncle to Common People by Pulp) and watching them on TV tonight I still want to be in their gang.

And I like Lady Gaga. And Neil Young is on later. And Michael Jackson was the King of Pop (listen to the music - there can be no argument). However.

As Chuck D of Public Enemy said - Elvis? He never meant shit to me.

He was being playful, but what I think he meant is that... Aw, I don't quite know.

When Tom Waits dies I will do the equivalent of lighting candles outside hotel rooms, twittering to the world, dressing up as a hobo and riding the rails, embarrassing myself by singing his tunes on the train... Meaning kost likely alcoholic debauch or suicide is most likely... so I can understand the grief of the fans. And I can imagine to agree with them - the situation in Iran don't mean shit to me (see Chuck D above).

I could be wrong.

Tell me you have the new British Sea Power album and that is evidence that you are not wrong.

I am going to sit down and listen to it now.

Personally I'm really impressed - who knew the head of UN forces in Kosovo had such an impact on the music world? And he was on This Week at the same time.
