There's something odd about Fox TV.

Having surprised most people by giving Dollhouse a second season, they have now cancelled it before it has chance to get anywhere...

From this discussion, I think it is probably a good thing, because like the writer I liked but didn't love it. But mainly because it will allow Joss Whedon finally to get out from under Fox TV and go somewhere in the cable networks where they might just give him the latitude he needs to develop his ideas.

In quieter moments over the past month or so I have been trying to write a short story. Indeed I have mentioned it in passing at least once.

I added a few lines today and scribbled some notes in my notebook. I like to pretend to be working even when technically I am not. For some reason, this story is like pulling teeth; I know what I want to write and I know, unusually for me, where the story is going. I understand the main characters and what they’re up to. I know why they’re doing what they’re doing. This has had the perverse effect of making it harder to write. Although the document has been updated a number of times over the past month, my habit of naming documents starting with the opening date (year/month/day) shows me that I started the document on 6 October. It’s still only just a paragraph over a single page of A4 in length. Of course, I have not worked on it for some time before today’s fiddles, but even so.

I must stop going back and fiddling until I have fully written the initial story. Then I can go back and edit for style and grammar; apply the mot juste later.

Unfortunately, that’s easier said than done. I do like trying things out and polishing as I go along. It’s a trial.
