On this day...
Tuesday, February 7th, 2012 11:26 amIt seems the anniversaries are just coming along in a flood right now, aren’t they?
Today is the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens (Happy birthday, Chaz; if you’re reading this by any chance could you drop me a line and let me know how Edwin Drood was supposed to turn out?), whilst yesterday was the 60th anniversary of the accession of the Queen and the official start of the Diamond Jubilee (I have to say that in all the photos I’ve seen of the Royal Couple, they are bearing up remarkably well for their ages, and shaving off his side whiskers has taken years off Prince Albert). Yesterday was also, incidentally, the anniversary of the proclamation of Charles II as king by the Scottish Parliament in 1649 and also of his death (his actual death, not the proclamation of it) in 1685 and the accession of James II & VII. Those Stuart monarchs, eh? Crazy kids.
For those who may be interested, yesterday was also Ronald Reagan’s 101st birthday. I’m sure there’s a joke to be had there somewhere, but it defeats me. More importantly, I think, is the fact that it was Patrick MacNee’s 90th birthday. That’s right: the ever dapper John Steed is ninety years old.
Today’s celebrations for Dickens should not be allowed to overshadow the fact that today is also a birthday for Dora Bryan, Emo Phillips and Eddie Izzard, though I doubt anyone will remember their 200th birthdays.
