Let it snow.

I have to confess that I am putting off doing a piece of work I started yesterday and which is going to take a significant portion of today and tomorrow. It is tedious and it is not the sort of task my brain is ideally suited to. Frankly, when I see this sort of problem, I find myself quietly surprised that there is no stronger correlation (or, in fact, any correlation that I am aware of) between the numbers of accountants and mad axe murderers.

I am coming around to the view that accountants are not inherently deathly dull, but that so many of their internal resources are focussed upon self control to prevent them running amok from frustration and boredom, that there is precious little left for meaningful social interaction. They are clearly far, far stronger personalities than their outward behaviour might otherwise suggest. They deserve their inflated pay packets for taking this burden upon themselves so that we may exist in a world relatively free of double entry book keeping and resource accounting.

We have discovered a decade old error that has to be tracked and corrected. The work has partially been done, but I need to calculate a settlement figure. Ideally, we could change the figures in the years involved and the system would recalculate with amendments, but a significant run of financial years in the middle of the run have been closed down and that is no longer an option. So I have to do it the old fashioned way.

Add to that the fact that the system has developed and mutated several times in that period and well, I feel like sharpening an axe.

Between full page photo spreads of Fabio Capello and Harry Redknapp’s peculiarly relaxed-tripe face and intermittent reporting about the imminent financial collapse of creation, there are continued dire warnings about the weather. We shall be covered in 8” of snow in the next few hours/days/months/years or so we are told. Once you get past the insanity of the National Press, who are foreswearing meaningful enquiry in this post Leveson age, it seems that there may actually be an outside chance of a sprinkle of the white stuff somewhere in the country and it may hang around for a while.

I really could do with a snow day and tomorrow would be ideal. Provided we remember to buy four pints of milk and a half dozen or so eggs, the Gin Palace is fully stocked to withstand an arctic siege over the weekend and beyond. Accuweather is being coy and predicting the chances of snow this evening at between 40 and 60% depending upon the hour. The graphic suggests reassuringly heavy falls if we get anything at all.

Fingers crossed for a long weekend and continued avoidance of this piece of work.

Is there such thing as a snow dance? Does anyone know how best to upset the snow gods?
