Lucky Lucan

What have I missed? There seems to have been a fair number of articles about Lord Lucan filling up corners of the press recently. Today’s Times has a two page spread on the case.

Initially, I assumed it was the anniversary or something, but it doesn’t seem to be: the ever reliable Wikipedia says that the murder and subsequent disappearance took place over the night of 7-8 November 1974 and that the courts declared him legally dead in October 1999. Short of some mathematical or astrological connection with this week that I do not understand or know about, I can’t fathom why the story is suddenly up and running again and grabbing significant column inches in a major daily newspaper.

I mean it’s an interesting case and all; everyone likes a good, unsolved gory murder involving high society nobs, but surely it’s not news. As far as I can tell, no-one is pushing a book on the back of the case, either.

The only new thing to crop up recently was the supposed discovery of what is purported to be the late Earl’s (expensive) wristwatch in a pawnbroker’s in (I think) South Africa, but no-one’s entirely sure that the watch is kosher as far as I can tell and therefore anything that stems from that is pure speculation.

Interesting, possibly, but hardly news.

Now if a 77 year old Dickie Bingham was to ride down The Mall on Shergar, THAT would be news.
