A media update

Today’s jollity is gleaned from a number of sources, but this being my journal, I may or may not credit those sources, depending upon whether or not I think I can bask in stolen and undeserved kudos.

Today of course, is budget day in the United Kingdom, the day when our beloved Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gorgeous George, stands up in Parliament and lets us know how he’s going to baffle the finest economics minds in the country by taking in less (read more) tax, cutting (read increasing) borrowing, reducing (read increasing) expenditure and ripping out (read tying up) red tape. I fully expect that it will be the usual smoke and mirrors that leaves us all subtly worse off while thinking that it looks as though we should be better off.

Essentially, the budget will boil down to providing an incentive to use deckchairs on the Titanic by cutting the cost of hiring them. There will be a phased increase in the provision of lifeboats and all Steerage Passengers will get tax breaks for swimming lessons.

Plus beer, wine and tobacco will be taxed through the nose. Again.

More importantly, the scuttlebutt on the interwebs is that the BBC will be unveiling someone called Jenna-Louise Coleman as the new companion for the Doctor when Karen Gillan leaves during the next season.

title or description

I’ve never heard of her before, but by all accounts she has appeared in Emmerdale. Expect to see Amos Brearley as the Lord President of Gallifrey and the Master regenerate into Henry Wilkes, who will roam the universe in a TARDIS that looks like a country pub.

Aspects of this speculation may be more true than others.1

Finally, we see that Harry Potter actor Jamie Waylett, who played Vincent Crabbe has been jailed for two years for his part in last summer’s riots and looting. On the plus side, the Sorting Hat has placed him with the Aryan Brotherhood.

1In fact, while I have been typing this tract, the BBC have confirmed the casting.
