Mists of Pandaria

Both [profile] ellefurtle and I signed up for the annual package with World of Warcraft when it was offered, because it was convenient and because it gave us free access to another game, if we want it (I’m not bothered and right now, I can’t remember what the other game is called, though I may try it out when it goes live) and the chance to participate in the Beta test of the forthcoming Mists of Pandaria expansion.

Having played a couple of years longer, Furtle received her invite to the beta test a couple or three weeks before me. I received mine toward the end of last week, but couldn’t install it because of strange conflicts on the PC. Wee then went away for the weekend and well…

Furtle had problems installing the downloader and so did I. In the end, I logged a query with Blizzard and we worked through their response and now the game has downloaded and installed properly. In a reversal of the usual process, it was Furtle who went through the instructions on my computer and achieved the necessary fiddles to ensure the download and installation. Normally she would go crackers with frustration in the way I do when I am dealing with say, call centres. That’s when I step in and muck about with the computer in the hopes of making it do what it is supposed to do. For some reason it worked the other way round last night and she stepped in to cover for my frustration.

I understand that the game we are playing is still in development and subject to regular change, but why on earth must the installer/downloader be so poorly designed that you can only make it work by tinkering with the innards of the computer?

To commemorate the eventual successful installation, I created a Pandarian monk, which I named ‘Snafubar’. No one seems to have picked up on it so far.

It all looks very pretty, but I’m not sure how different any of it is yet, other than in flavour. Okay, there are new attacks and moves, but they operate in the same way as most others. Since the beta will only let you level (I believe) to level 10, the interesting stuff, like the new talent trees, glyphs and archaeology etc aren’t available, being things that come online post level 10. At the moment, I can’t even find trainers…

I have requested a copy of my main toon to be included in the test, so I can see how the new systems work, but thus far the copy hasn’t appeared on the server, so your guess is as good as mine.

In the wider WoW world, it may soon be time to start stockpiling low-level mats with a view to making a killing on the auction house when the full Mists of Pandaria is launched.
