I seem to be at least mainly ready for the forthcoming hellfest that is commuting through the Olympic Park during the period of the games. As I have tried to indicate in the past, I am not so much adverse to the games in and of themselves, it's the hideous cost, disruption and naked commercialism of it all that puts me off. That and the fact that a chunk of my taxes paid for it and when we go to the two events in the Paralympics that we have tickets for, we are expected to be there a couple of hours in advance as if we were flying to North Korea or something.

Anyway.

I brought home an office lap top last night and spent the middle part of today getting it to talk to my wireless at home. This was reasonably easy, but with a single complication that is both stupid and (I hope) understandable.

I was told that the whole thing was configured for remote working with my profile etc preloaded. All I needed to do, I was told, was to link it to my wi-fi, follow the step-by-step security instructions and bingo. Well, the instructions were pretty good, but clearly I managed in good old fashioned rookie mistake stylee, to take my IT contact at work both literally and at his word. I followed the procedures as outlined and it all worked splendidly up to the point I actually wanted to log in to the network. It is supposed to look for the office network first and then roam for others. Well, it just looked and looked for the office network. Despite showing it physically, both the router and my iPhone, which enjoys a close working relationship with the wi-fi it broadcasts, the laptop was having none of it. It couldn't find any of the large number of local networks run by our neighbours either.

Of course, this was soon sorted after a brief chat with the office IT helpdesk.

Switch the laptop's wi-fi connection on. Um... As I say, rookie mistake, BUT I WAS TOLD IT WAS READY AND SET UP!! WAAAAH!

So there we are. I have access to my personal drive and office email. I do not have access to the shared drives, but I shall tackle that on Monday; I can't be bothered on what is supposed to be a day off. Especially as I can transfer files to my personal drive back in the office.

Now, on an entirely different note, to try and find out why we only have special needs sunflowers in our garden. The first lot we planted went horribly wrong almost immediately. The second ones got started off in the conservatory in pots. They rapidly took their cue from creepers and had to be attached to sticks to keep them upright. They got stronger, but the bodies are still far too weedy to exist without the sticks. They are incapable of holding the weight of their own dwarfishly small heads. God only knows what they would be like if the heads were fully grown.

In the meantime, the rest of the garden, the one which three months ago we were despairing of ever seeing a green plant in that was not a cactus, has turned into a bloody jungle. The buddliea in particular has triffid-like fancies.
