A bit of this, a bit of that
Monday, July 16th, 2012 03:42 pmSo on Saturday I braved the monsoon and made my way to Walthamstow for my first ever Odyssey Writing Team meet. I kind of signed on maybe eighteen months ago, but frankly, with one thing or another it’s still waiting to happen. Last year was a washout on account of the job and all the travails surrounding the cuts and having to reapply for my own job and then for the first part of this year, communication never quite seemed to get off the ground, so I didn’t contribute. To add insult to injury, on the weekend of the last event my cousin was getting married, so family duty ensured I didn’t get to Odyssey then, either.
So anyway, here I am sitting on the periphery of the writing team, with little to no clue what they are talking about. Meanwhile Furtle is at home supervising the man who has now rebuilt the fence out front of the Gin Palace. I made a couple of interjections and/or pithy (I like to think they were, at least) comments and may have come away with some expectation that I add to the plotline for one of the Magisteria. I’m really not clear on this and will have to check the Dropbox and wiki regularly to see what is developing.
Still, I have broken my duck and made one of the discussions. The received wisdom is that I should go along to the next event and (I guess) crew, so that I can get first hand experience of what goes on and how it all fits together. That will be early August, right in the Olympic period. I shall need a lift I think. I don’t fancy the thought of getting through the capital to a station for a train to wherever.
The fence has been fixed nicely, though.
Much to my surprise yesterday managed to stay dry for much if not most of the time. I didn’t do much gardening per se, but I think it’s fair to say that the bushes and shrubs down the right hand side of the garden and the buddleia on the left really don’t know what hit them. I have managed to reclaim a good yard of clothes line, make it easier to get down the path and taught the buddleia what for. Of course with the latter, it won’t look any different after a couple more weeks’ rain, but that’s the way it goes, I guess. After trimming I sloped back in for a coffee and a sandwich before tidying up outside. This gave one of the fox cubs – now rather larger than last time I’d seen one, the opportunity to go on a slug/worm hunt in the patch of very trimmed herbs and chives.
In the evening, I even managed to sit out in the garden for a few minutes with a cup of tea after supper, for only the second or third time in what we laughingly call the summer in these parts. That was good, but it is a little dispiriting to see everything growing like mad, but none of the fruit or vegetables (pace rampant lettuce) ripening.
A little drop of sun, please.
