Feed me, Seymour

Well, I’ve been doing this low carb –not-quite-Atkins-but-similar-if-less-strict diet for a month or so now, with the occasional break (I decided to have roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding a week ago and yesterday, damn it I had chips and some bread pudding – though not at the same time) I haven’t knowingly eaten a carbohydrate. Well, obviously, a carbohydrate or two will have found its way in from time to time, but by not eating bread, pasta, rice or potatoes, breakfast cereals and such, I’ve kept it pretty much as low carb as I can.

Anyway, I can now state happily, that I have lost a full stone in that time. That’s 14lbs to those colonials who only go so far with old measures. I am hoping to do that again before Christmas at which point I shall take a break for a day or two without going too mad on the food intake. I should like to lose a further 70lbs or so to bring me from being borderline two people to simply large. At that point, if I manage to reach it, I shall challenge the quack where necessary, to suggest courses of action other than the lazy ‘lose weight’ that they always trot out. After I’d given up smoking all those years ago, there was a noticeable period of disappointment if I was consulting the quack when he realised that he couldn’t cure my ingrown toenail by having me stop smoking. I’m sure the same disappointment will show when I am only the size of about one and a half people. Or not.

Suffice it to say that for the time being, I am quite happy having lost my first 14lbs. It would be nice if it peeled off quicker – I lost 10lbs in the first week and then wobbled (hah) back and forth for the next three weeks before the next four came off and stayed off. I realise that’s not a sustainable speed, but by crackey it was a morale-booster. Most of it was water, I suspect and part of the reason it took the rest of the month for the next four pounds to come off would have been that all stabilizing.

Still, there we go. If I can keep this up with minor breaks until Christmas, there is a reasonable chance that I can lose another 14lbs and then in the New year I can try and go for it again and shrink away to a mere shadow of my former self.

I might have to start thinking about new clothes. But not just yet.
