Suddenly this morning it was 1961 or thereabouts. This didn’t become evident until I had left The Carpathia and got on the Tube.

I know that the weather is warm and that shorts and loose shirts are the order of the day, but quite when these shirts became Hawaiian again, I don’t know. And the straw hats. Suddenly the world is filling up with straw Trilbies and Homburgs; particularly the latter:


They're trying to pass this off as a Cuban Straw Fedora, but it's clearly closer to a Homburg!

Where, oh where is the Panama Hat? Are we to suffer a Cliff Richard revival? What of the Shadows and endless recitals of Apache?

I have one - a roll up version. It's grand.

Generally speaking, I am a fedora man myself, but for some reason fedora-style panamas don't suit me.

We needs a picture of the panama and you smoking the biggest stogie you can find whilst hunched menacingly over keyboards...

it is sad, IMHO, as the optimo panama in the photo in my icon is the second i purchased, which i bought on the first date i had with a woman i am still very much in love with. however, she does not speak to me now and the hat is damaged beyond wearability, so i must invest in the SUPER AWESOME HAND-WOVEN ECUADORIAN PANAMA which i'm sure will be the most ultimate hat of any kind i've ever worn.

i promise to you, Sir Bryan, that i will have a very fine photo of myself with keyboard implements and a smoking device of some kind taken soon after my my receipt of this hand-made marvel of traditional haberdashery.

i will warn you i may not be able to comply with the stogie request as i gave up cigars when the got stupid expensive about 10 years ago, but i may consider picking up a Marsh Wheeling (the only cigar i will still smoke) to celebrate the birth of my new headgear.
