Early indications are that the new X-Files movie is worth about 3.5 stars out of 10. The Times suggests that it is an average TV episode stretched to feature length; not earth-shatteringly bad, but not quite good enough to make you care about the story.
telemeister suggested something similar when he wrote it up the other day.
I think I may try to read another review before deciding whether to go and see it or whether to just wait for the DVD.
Besides, we haven't seen Dark Knight yet and everyone agrees about that, too. Just rather more positively, is all.
Poot. I had such high hopes.

I don't think I've heard a single negative or neutral view about Dark Knight (which worries me as it bolsters my expectations).
Besides, Dark Knight is going to be showing throughout August.
WALL-E is worth a watch, the last third is perhaps more orientated at the kids, but the animation is lovely and the first third is pretty much akin to Tati style 'silent' comedy.

Appropriately enough, my Uncle was a huge Jaques Tati fan.

WALL-E is more active than Tati, but I can see some sort of influence there.

Excellent - must have been great in the holidays and fete day...

Date: 2008-08-01 10:17 am (UTC)Christian Bale plays shallow Bruce Wayne better than he plays Batman - mainly because his face is perhaps even less expressive than Keanu Reeves - but that really doesn't matter because Heath Ledger is the most stunning Joker ever. Whenever he's on the screen he owns it. I'm gutted he's dead, but this really is the performance of a lifetime. Maggie Gyllenhaal is also excellent, deeply believable as the Girl They Both Want To Marry, and her slightly quirky look distinguishes her marvellously from the various interchangeably model-perfect girls Bruce Wayne keeps trailing around with. The cinematography is brilliant, with a really inky composition & feel to some of the shots.
