Just back in from [livejournal.com profile] romney's having watched the extended version of Return of the King. That's all three fully extended movies in four days. The extended versions are leagues ahead of the original cinematic releases, and at some point in the future, I shall queue up at the Prince Charles in Leicester Square when they inevitably show the extended versions back to back on the silver screen. Some time in the next five years, I reckon.

The only bit of the extended ROTK that still grates with me is the use of the army of the dead as a deus ex machina, but so much of the rest of it is now right with the additional scenes added in, that I can live with it. The cinematic presentation remains disappointing.

It is clear to me, however, that Frodo's reason for leaving for Valinor at the end of the movie was a pretext, and nothing to do with his old morgul wound. It became readily apparent across the three movies that the last of the Baggins's was not, so to speak, the marrying kind. Once it became clear that the object of his affections was happily married and settled down with Rosie, the only option left for him was a trip west in the hopes of some hot elf action in the undying lands.

It must be hard, being the only gay in the Shire.
