For anyone who may be interested, The Times is giving away a copy of How to Write Better English, by Robert Allen. It is part of the Penguin writers’ guides series.

There are four other titles in the series and it appears that they will be giving them away over the coming week. The titles are:

How to Punctuate, by George Davidson,
How to Write Effective Emails, by R. L. Trask,
Improve Your Spelling, by George Davidson, and
Writing for Business, by Chris Shevlin.

There was a wonderful parody of The Six Million Dollar Man in CRACKED magazine.

I only remember two gags. One was visual, but the other went:

"We can repair him, We can make him gooder than he was. Faster... stronger... gooder."

"Better, surely?"

"Hey, we're scientists, not English majors."

It's a shame that it's not the Sun or the Mirror who are giving them away - I daresay most of The Times' readers are probably fairly well sorted in that department.
