Catcher in the Rye was one of the first 'proper' books I read. It totally blew me away, I didn't really grasp it (I was about 11) but it made an impact (probably not an entirely positive one!:) The image/metaphor of catching children in a field of Rye, goes right to the core of what it is to be human, and anxious about that perculiar state...or summink.
