When nerds pack

I am on a coffee break from packing comics. I think it may extend into a belated lunch break. I have filled 6 proper collectors' boxers with comics - I don't remember reading half of them - and I have four boxes to go. The latter shouldn't be a problem since there is only one remaining stash of unboxed comicdom, but that's in a hard to get to corner and may include a mouse nest. After that, I have others, already in photocopier paper boxes. I shall empty as many of those as I have proper storage for, and use the copy paper boxes for books instead.

I have so much crap it's not true.

Once these are all boxed, I guess it will be back to spending most spare time bagging and ditching before actual packing. I need to create space to actually pack in. The more I sort out, the more cluttered everything becomes, and I'm not sleeping outside, thank you very much.

[livejournal.com profile] romney has kindly volunteered to store stuff for me - and this process started last night. It's all stuff that is light but bulky and has a sell on value, so I'm not ditching it. I can transfer it a bit at a time after the move proper has taken place. Especially as it looks as though [livejournal.com profile] romney will be in India for a couple of months, and I shall have to pay the odd visit to his flat to check it hasn't disappeared or anything.

If packing is such a distressing and time consuming process, I am half minded not to bother unpacking once I get to the other end; just stack it all neatly and throw a rug over it all.

Make a feature of it; a conversation piece: "Ah yes, it may look like a pile of packed junk with a rug over it, but in fact it's a scale model of Killaminjaro. Just wait until I've sprinkled icing sugar on top."

I have discovered a knackered old portable telly amid the piles of stuff. I thought I'd junked it years ago. If this is symptomatic, I guess we know why I have no space, don't we? It seems that I was half right; the accompanying remote is nowhere to be found. I clearly threw away the easy bit.

I think my next task will be the hardest. I have to go through my mountains of books and decide which to give to the charity shops, which to ditch entirely, and which to keep. My instinct is that column C will be much bigger than the others if I am not too careful. Happily I know someone who will take a bundle of them off me; I am quite happy for them to go to a good home. The videos and games remain a problem. Few people want German games, and fewer want secondhand videos in the age of the DVD (I Understand that Comet don't even stock VCRs any more).

Ah well, it's gone 3.30. I need to iron a shirt for work tomorrow, then go out, get some cash and have something to eat. Packing and sorting for today is complete. It's quiz night, after all.

Still willing to take games to Stabcon if you can get them here by Thursday night. (Books? did someone say books?)

We can probably also send over some sturdy boxes once we've got them back from the other friend who's moved with them.

i may have missed something along the way but I don't understand why the total cut down on stuff... aren't you moving to the place that used to fit Phil, Simon, Adam and have room to spare?

Is the cleansing good for the soul?

If its just the transport there are a number of cars that can traverse london box laden for you...

which leads to the question "dyou know which weekend you are moving and how many helpers you have/need yet?"

You've got the place right.

I think what you may be underestimating is the sheer unadulterated amount of completely useless rubbish I have accumulated over the 15 years I have been in this place. I even surprised myself with just how much clutter and junk I was able to unearth once I'd started.

In addition to the CDs, cassette tapes, books, comics, videos, DVDs, clothes, artefacts & gewgaws, swords and other junk, I have a PC, printer, two scanners, two tellies, a DVD player, hi-fi, two collapsable shelves and an armchair to shift. One fan, a microwave, three pimlicos and a wadjamcallit or ten.

That's not counting a 16' scarf, courtesy [livejournal.com profile] thalinoviel, 6 and 1/2 TARDISs, and two Yellow Submarines.

So, I think it must be the 'cleansing is good for the soul' approach..

I'll issue a despairing plea for help in a week or so, unless I'm pinned by an avalanche of wadjamcallits...

Depending on the date of the move, I'm also able to assist in the shifting of stuff from south to north.

Two things occur. Firstly, I know someone who may well be interested in German games. They are also likely to be at Stabcon, which links in with [livejournal.com profile] bibliogirl's comment above. If the games do go there, try to find and speak to Steve and Lesley Gibson about them.

Secondly, I have a van (albeit one of the cars-with pretensions ones that have extra seats and windows in). If you can let me know when you're moving, I may well be able to either come down and help, or get the van to someone who can bring it to you ([livejournal.com profile] ashenkat? Would you be willing to do this?

i suspect that once Bry announces, there will be cars, including estates, left right and centre available. Would love to drive a Berlingo again - but maybe not your new Berlingo, in central London!
However if the final count ends up short then would brave it if you will :)

Books. Oooh be careful with them; I worry about characters in books being stranded in junked piles and coming back for revenge.
Hmmmm, there's a story in that ;)
